Feeling passionate about passionfruit!
A summer of passion.
The sun has started to peek out and it's officially the hottest day of the year so far. This has us excited for summer; the picnics and barbecues and all other forms of alfresco drinking. It's summer cocktail time, yusss, let's get all passionfruity up in here! For me, one of the rituals to mark the start of the brief and glorious warm months is the first Solero. So this cocktail is in homage of my summer tradition.
Solero Float
30ml Bristol Syrup Co Passionfruit syrup
20ml coconut rum
30ml pineapple juice
Shake and pour into a big glass with ice
Top glass with sparkling mango
Finish with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream.
We can't talk about passionfruit and not mention one of the ultimate modern classics, which is of course the infamous Pornstar Martini. Created in 2002 by Douglas Ankrah, it was originally called the Maverick Martini, after a slightly seedy gentleman's club in Cape Town, but was quickly changed to the moniker we now know it by. I've heard various different reasons for the evocative name, passionfruits are supposedly an aphrodisiac, hence the name, it was named after the fun fruity nature of the drink. Ankrah himself says he called it that simply because he thought it would be the cocktail a pornstar would drink. But whatever the inspiration behind the name, it's one of the UK's most popular cocktails. Be@1 alone sell around 25,000 pornstars a quarter (that's a lotta hooch!) When you think about it, it's really not that surprising. Made properly it's one hell of a cocktail, well balanced, fruity, refreshing and it looks great.
So lets crack out a bottle of passionfruit and toast to the summer.
Pornstar Martini
25ml Bristol Syrup Co Passionfruit syrup
40ml vanilla vodka
20ml passionfruit liqueur
40ml apple juice
Shake and serve in a cocktail glass.
Garnish with half a passionfruit and a shot of sparkling wine.
And finally, why stop at just passionfruit cocktails. If you'd rather soak up all the cocktails with some delicious cakes, I've also been experimenting with our Passionfruit syrup in baking. Behold, the very tasty Bristol Syrup co and Ahh Toots collab - Passionfruit Drizzle Cakes! (or Passionfruit Jizzle cakes in the words Danny Walker.)
